I'm not familiar with director John Wells as he hasn't done a lot of movies, but I am familiar with his work on Shameless which is a great TV series.
So for him to direct a powerhouse of a cast that gave some of the greatest performances, this was quite an achievement.
As with Shameless, there's always a big cast. So Wells is already good in that, letting the audience get to know the characters one at a time. Also when it comes to creating crazy family drama, Wells has had plenty of experience in that territory too. No wonder he chose to direct this story. So, while there's plenty of family drama in this movie, it might have been one too many for me when the last surprise came.
But the one "sequence" which was at the dinner table, was where all the magic happened as family members went at each other.
Meryl Streep gave another incredible performance here, but stepping up right beside her was Julia Roberts too. And close on their heels were Chris Cooper and Margo Martindale.
And, fun fact, this is the third movie Benedict Cumberbatch is in that's in the running for best picture in this year's Academy Awards. He's like everywhere this year. Good for him!
