The Drop (7.5/10)

From the same mind of Dennis Lehane who brought us Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River, two very iconic movies for the crime-thriller genre, I was excited to be able to catch this while visiting Singapore.

This is my first Michael R. Roskam movie and I really liked it. I enjoyed the director's style of storytelling and his choices of using scenes to create atmosphere.

From inside the first 5 minutes, I was in the movie. Roskam pulled me into his world with his style and tone and I immediately thought this would be something great.

Coupled that with Tom Hardy's performance, this should have been one of the highlights of the year. But it just didn't quite reach that level. I still enjoyed it immensely though.

Also this is the first time I see Hardy in this kind of role - and also my first time to see him as the lead in a movie. I finally understood why he's so sought after today. This guy has range; and his onscreen charisma - even playing a character that's not the most likeable - he was still very likeable.

Noomi Rapace also was a revelation for me. I've only really saw her in Prometheus (a movie that I didn't really care for) as I've never saw her in the original version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy.

Supporting cast of James Gandolfini, John Ortiz and Matthias Schoenaerts were also great additions.

However, I was hoping the movie would pump the pistons and take the story up a notch. It just never got to a sweet spot that made it fully satisfactory. I wondered, if under a great director like Scorsese or Affleck, the outcome may have been something great.
