20th Century Fox Breaks Cinema Records But Delays Apes Sequel
For 20th Century Fox, it has been a fantastic year. It has just been reported that they have broken global box office record with more than USD 5.5 billion in 2014 - that's USD 350 million more than the previous record set in 2011.
Domestically, Fox came in top among all the movie studios, recording their best year ever. Internationally, Fox has the highest box office gross for all the global studios for the fourth time in 6 years.
This shouldn't come as a surprise considering that X-Men: Days Of Future Past, How To Train Your Dragon 2 and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes all came as huge franchise sequels that were all beloved, as well as smaller projects like Gone Girl generating Oscar buzz and The Fault In Our Stars becoming a surprise runaway hit. The Maze Runner was also a successful start to another franchise that could be big down the road.
However, some dates shake-ups have also been reported.
The third installment of Planet Of The Apes has been delayed for one whole year, 14 July 2017 from the summer of 2016. No reasons were given at this point but the rumour is that director Matt Reeves has requested for more time to develop the story.
This in turn prompted the sequel to this year's Fantastic Four that originally has the 14 July date to shift forward slightly to 2 June 2017.
With Fox's huge closing for 2014, they have also announced a big 2016 in terms of the comic book world, confirming the release of the X-Men character spin-off for Gambit starring Channing Tatum, giving their 2016 three Marvel comic book titles; the other two being Deadpool in February and X-Men: Apocalypse in May.
