In The Heart Of The Sea - Review (8/10)

Ron Howard love to shoot the technical side of things in action. In Rush, there's the process of the Formula One cars during a race. And here, In The Heart Of The Sea, it's the process of the workings on a ship.

And what's beautiful about Howard's direction is that he would shoot all these practically and not have any CGI whenever possible. Of course, most of the movie was probably shot in front of a green screen but still, Howard always brings a sense of realism in his movies with the way he chooses to shoot scenes.

But what I'm more impressed with was the direction he was able to give the cast. And he has a very competent cast to work with, Chris Hemsworth, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Wishaw, Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker, Tom Holland and Michelle Fairley.

For one, I did not see Hemsworth as Thor anymore. He has really become this whaler with that first scene where showed his prowess and swiftly opened up a sail. I believed him as a sailor.

Hemsworth dialogue and rivalry with Walker was one of the highlights of the movie, but Gleeson and Wishaw's exchange was most captivating.

And to see Holland for the first time in a role that really pushed him, I'm glad that he is our new Spider-Man.

But all of these were dwarfed by the amazing look of the whale that inspired the story of Moby Dick. The CGI used were just impressive, and we even got a sense of its character, which intimidated even the audience and not just those onscreen. I only wished the battle was more epic, more like the actual action in Moby Dick.

Still, the overall story was actually a good mix between the whale encounters and the survival of the aftermath. And the story and its events felt real, which in this case I thought was full credit to Howard. Also, there was a moving score to go with the movie.
