Krampus - Review

Even though this is a horror, or comedy-horror to be exact, it did bring with it the Christmas spirit. And it's my first Christmas movie of the year (Love The Coopers is out this week).

This was a perfect blend of comedy and horror. The comedic elements started with the cousins coming in and who and what they represented. As cliche as they were but everything was done in good fun and deliberately so.

Written and directed by Michael Daugherty, I thought he done a great job bringing this small horror flick about Krampus to life. And I couldn't help but suspect that he is heavily influenced by Bryan Singer in some of his action sequences - after all, he collaborated closely with Singer in X-Men 2 and Superman Returns, as well as the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.

Daugherty also kept close to the source material of Krampus, which originated in the Alpine folklore; which is the primary reason why the grandma in the story, played by Krista Stadler, spoke German.

Being a comedy as well, the horror parts weren't exactly meant to scare the audience; but the creatures, though not hideously scary, were still created to be scary.

I thought the cast was an inspired choice with Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner and Allison Tolman leading the way.

But I think the winning formula was the pacing and the overall tone that really kept the story interesting and fun, and still infused some Christmas spirit into it.

There's also a twist somewhere - I won't and can't say where - which I didn't see coming and really liked how the movie ended.
