Hail, Caesar! - Review (6.5/10)

Would that it were so simple.

That brilliantly cut, second trailer featuring Joseph Fiennes and Alden Ehrenreich had a better impact than the actual version in the movie.

With such a star-studded cast, Josh Brolin and George Clooney carried the story with much ease. Everyone else had much smaller roles and appeared almost too briefly sometimes. The stood out performers were undoubtedly Fiennes and Ehrenreich, as well as Scarlett Johansson and Tilda Swinton.

This definitely wasn't anywhere what the Coen Brothers are capable of in terms of both directing and writing. The buildup sometimes slowed to a crawl and the payoff at the end was not entertaining or dramatic enough.

There were two very memorable scenes that were hilarious; one being the above-mentioned duo while the other involved Brolin's character with four others at a table discussing religion in an ingenious premise with a stupidly funny ending.

There was a sing and dance number that was briefly shown in trailers involving Channing Tatum but I only wished that the singing was done live.

As for Clooney, his shtick in this type of buffoonery is getting old and no longer is enjoyable as what I remember before. I heard other critics describe his comedic acting as pulling faces and I really saw it this time. Not as bad as to take me out of the movie but no longer as genuine.

Other Coen Brother's movies would be easy enough to sit through again but this probably will not be one of them.
