Review - Magic Mike XXL (4/10)
Steven Soderbergh probably recognised how much of a step down the script for this sequel, Magic Mike XXL, was even though it's written by the same writer as the original, Reid Carolin. So he let his protege, Gregory Jacobs, take over the directing role.
The story moved too slowly and with very little heart at its core, unlike the first movie which had a solid storyline with characters we learn to care for. This one unfortunately, just boasted some recognisable faces but with very little at stake; other than having Joe Manganiello whine and pout a few times like he was back in a Twilight movie.
When Channing Tatum started dancing, that was still a joy to watch. But it's all that detour the characters had to take on the way to Myrtle Beach that became such a drag. No pun intended.
The introduction of the new characters like Andie McDowell, Amber Hurt, Donald Glover, Stephen Boss and Jada Pinkett Smith could have been better. Maybe only Smith had a better character to play with while Glover and Hurt didn't have enough to do.
Even the big final dance at the end wasn't interesting enough to save this movie from boredom as by then I was just waiting for the credits to roll.
