This is quite an interesting move by Warner Bros. Pictures because the October date is prime for awards consideration for 2018. But with this new date, it looks like either Live By Night sucks (which is unlikely), or WB wants it to be a contender for 2017's Academy Awards instead of 2018.
With a January release date, the studio can still have an advanced and limited screening in December, just like what American Sniper and The Revenant did.
Live By Night is another adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel. The first one Affleck adapted was Gone Baby Gone, which was also an award-winning film.

Let's see what WB does with it as we get nearer to the award season.
