Lights Out Confirms Sequel After First Week Success
According to Deadline, New Line Cinema has very quickly confirmed a sequel to their hit movie Lights Out which came out the week before.
The first movie's budget was only USD 4.9 million, and on the Friday of its opening, it has already made USD 35 million worldwide. So this is of little surprise that the studio would quickly want to turn the light to green and get a sequel in development.
Director David F. Sandberg will return to direct, Eric Heisserer will return to provide a script, and James Wan will produce it under his Atomic Monster company.
Sandberg is really experiencing that Hollywood story. He and his producer wife, Lotta Losten, were both struggling artists in the Sweden movie industry until he participated in a British filmmaking competition organised by Bloody Cuts. His short, Lights Out, didn't win but he did win for best director. Next thing that happened, New Line called them.
Now he's already directing his second ever movie with James Wan's spin-off, Annabelle 2, before returning to Lights Out 2; which doesn't have a release date just now but I wouldn't be surprised if it's also coming out next year. These small budget horror flicks can be filmed in a couple of months and rolled out in the same year!
I still haven't caught the first movie, which is playing in cinemas now, because I know for a fact that I'm going to be scared. The concept from the trailer has already gotten me spineless.
