[Review] The Nice Guys (9/10)

This is another Shane Black movie that shows him back in great form after Iron Man 3 received lukewarm responses from fans. Perhaps they weren't into a Shane Black's version of a Marvel movie, or this version of The Mandarin didn't sit well with them; but I thought it was still a very good movie.

The Good Guys once again showed just how good a writer and director Black is. And with great actors like Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, this movie was close to perfect.

One of the standouts was clearly Angourie Rice, portraying a young girl wise beyond her age and constantly put her father in his place. This is an actress who is going places. Margaret Qualley also was another good addition.

The humour was always on point and the physical comedy would hit you when you least expected it. The plot moved very quickly except for just a few places in the second act, but there was always a point to every scene, if not then it was a setup to a call-back later on.

The ending also went with something that was not exactly a generic feel, and it was definitely fun to follow the two main leads to see their friendship develop.

As only his third feature for Black, his sensibilities in direction and storytelling definitely is something I really enjoy and will look out for more.
