[Review] The Secret Life Of Pets (7/10)

Universal Pictures has another winner here with The Secret Life Of Pets as it finally opened up for us here in Southeast Asia. Its premise is adorable and the characters even more so. Definitely pulling at the heart strings of pet owners.

The entertainment factor was strong because the storyline was strong. And the adventure itself by the two main leads, voiced by Louis C.K. and Eric Stonestreet; from when they first met to risking life and death, were engaging and very relatable.

I also appreciated the way the trailers didn't show a lot of the plot points, making the experience of following the characters more enjoyable.

I would have liked more frequency in the big laughs as they didn't come enough. But I found myself smiling at the screen most of the time.

One of the reasons was Kevin Hart voicing the adorable and fluffy white bunny. The character itself was absurd and audacious, all in the right amount of crazy. Had this movie been a bigger hit, this character might have been Hart's Olaf from Frozen or even Genie from Aladdin.

There were a couple of times when the story suddenly took a weird turn and gone very dark, like Tattoo the pig. While I applaud the risk it took, but I also question whether it was really necessary.

The animation this time also offered nothing new and the style was still the same as Despicable Me, where legs were all super thin. But I do like consistencies.

I know that a sequel is inevitable and already announced but at this point I'm not sure I want a sequel as I can't see the storytellers coming up with something more original for the property. Last thing we want is another Madagascar.
