[Editorial] My Top 10 Best Movies Of 2016
I know, I know, this is way overdue. But I just wanted to catch as many of the Oscar-nominated movies as I can before making this list. There are still many that I have not seen, but I wanted to get this list out there before the Oscars are out. Plus, it is already the last week of February.
Once again, this list follows my scoring system on the reviews and will be ranked accordingly. If more than one movie share the same score, it will be arranged by my personal preference.
This year actually has been quite a good year for top-notched movies. I am really spoiled for choice as to which movies should take up the bottom half. It was not easy so I'll list some of them in the honorable mentions.
So here goes:
10. Train To Busan (8.5/10)
One of South Korea's finest horror movies that started off very slow, but once the zombies showed up, there was no slowing it down. Some of the execution in the suspense was brilliantly done that no Hollywood movie could replicate to the same effect.
9. The Jungle Book (8.5/10)
Technology at its finest. Other than Doctor Strange, nothing else can come close to the CGI of this amazing movie directed by Jon Favreau.
8. Moana (8.5/10)
Another one of Walt Disney Animation's best offerings in recent years. From the music to the storytelling, this should win Best Animation.
7. Deadpool (8.5/10)
Who saw this one coming? Entertainment at its best.
6. Star Trek Beyond (9/10)
The trailers almost turned this movie into a failure. Instead, this is the best Star Trek movie of this era. This is what a Star Trek movie should be. Action driving a philosophical message.
5. Don't Breathe (9/10)
Another great surprise for the horror genre. It's nothing to do with spiritual beings but Stephen Lang might as well have been one.
4. Hacksaw Ridge (9/10)
The return of Mel Gibson as a director. Started off a little bit shaky but that second half transported audiences into a war zone.
3. The Nice Guys (9/10)
The best comedy of the year came in this action-comedy. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling made such a great pair, full of chemistry and comedic timing. One of Shane Black's best.
2. Captain America: Civil War (9/10)
The movie that all fan boys were waiting for. The clash of the good guys, including Spider-Man. But that end fight between Captain America and Iron Man was one that no one will forget.
1. La La Land (9.5/10)
Almost perfection other than the weak singing vocals of the two leads. But Emma Stone needs to win her first Oscar with this performance. I love this movie so much that I know I could watch this over and over. Plus the songs are infectious.
---------------------------------------------------------
As for the honorable mentions, here are some of the movies that are worth checking out if you have not; because these are the ones that I wish I could have included them too. I have also thrown in a couple at the bottom which I found surprisingly fun and entertaining, and should not be missed as well.
Green Room (8.5/10)
One of Anton Yelchin's last movies where he showed some incredible range.
Hell Or High Water (8.5/10)
Superb performances all around and a well crafted movie that's nominated for an Oscar.
The Birth Of A Nation (8.5/10)
Controversial but an excellent movie that felt raw and I thought it was more difficult to swallow than 12 Years A Slave.
The Witch (8.5/10)
One of the year's best horror movie in an indie format that was a slow burn but disturbing in a very quiet manner.
Arrival (8.5/10)
If you understand it, it's a wonderful story that is beautifully shot.
X-Men: Apocalypse (8.5/10)
Many found this problematic but I could accept most of the problems. I still enjoy Bryan Singer's direction.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (8/10)
I have had my problems with it but many do not share my sentiment. Still, the best Star Wars prequel ever made.
Storks (8.5/10)
All the trailers did not do this movie justice. It was fun, heartfelt, funny, and entertaining as hell.
Doctor Strange (7.5/10)
It's Marvel. Enough said.
The Magnificent Seven (7.5/10)
I really enjoyed it for what it was and watched it twice in the cinema. This was the Western that we've been waiting for.
Zootopia (7.5/10)
Another great movie from Walt Disney Animation that I suspect if I watched it a second time the rating may go higher.
