[Editorial] My Top 10 Worst Movies Of 2016

The year of movies would not be complete for me without another fun activity of listing down the worst movies that I had the misfortune of encountering and spending hard earned money on.

So here it is in descending order, or bad to worse:

10. Bounty Hunters (4/10)
Had it been better casting that did not just focus on pretty faces but also talent, this movie could have had more fun. But all the females did not look the part and had no chemistry with their counterparts, which created more distraction from the potential it could have been.

9. Allegiant (3.5/10)
Bringing in heavy hitters like Octavia Spencer and Jeff Daniels were never going to change where this movie was headed. They needed an overhaul but unfortunately it was already two movies in and there was not much that could be changed. The cast probably gave their best effort but the characters themselves were just difficult to follow, especially the lead.

8. Underworld: Blood Wars (3.5/10)
There was really no reason for this movie to exist. But I guess Kate Beckinsale really needed the money and this is the only franchise she has. They tried to revive it but they failed.

7. Assassin's Creed (3.5/10)
Completely wrong cast and wrong creators all around, and too many unanswered questions that may have made sense or given a pass as a video game; unfortunately not as a feature film that is trying to attract the general movie audience.

6. The Great Wall (3.5/10)
Giant lizards being the reason that the Great Wall of China was built. Brilliant start to a promise that disappointed so much in the intricacies of its detail. Plot holes aplenty and things happened in the beginning for no real reasons. Had it not been for a bit of good action and somewhat entertaining characters, it could have gone worse.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows (3.5/10)
The first one at least was still entertaining - which is why I rooted for the sequel. But for some weird reason, the producers decided to dumb down the movie and plot even further; alienating the adult audience when it is us who grew up with the 90's cartoon that they should be focusing on.

4. The Mermaid (3.5/10)
The Stephen Chow that made Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer has definitely left. In his stead is a director and producer that has lost the heart of making good movies that, while makes no logical sense, at least was fun to watch. This one just tried too hard and did not achieve much.

3. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (3/10)
The acronym of the title could not be more apt. What was advertised as a comedy in the trailers turned out to be a slow drama that plateaued the moment it started. Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, nobody could have saved how boring it was.

2. Exposed (3/10)
Again, another one of those movies that I naively kept hoping it would get better, more thrilling perhaps in this case. But no, stepping out of the movie felt like I just got out of a daze. Keanu Reeves must have made this movie before John Wick.

1. League Of Gods (2/10)
Here's a movie that I thought would at least be good fun but I just want to put a gun to my head and pull the trigger. I kept waiting for it to maybe turn the tide a little towards the final act but no, it just stayed at rock bottom.

Other bad movies that deserve a mention include:

Lights Out (4/10)
Magic Mike XXL (4/10)
The Huntsman: Winter's War (4/10)
Ride Along 2 (4/10)
Independence Day: Resurgence (5/10)
