[Review] The LEGO Batman Movie (7.5/10)
LEGO and Warner Bros. Pictures are building their own cinematic empire. We are getting two LEGO movies this year with The LEGO Ninjago Movie coming out in September.
After watching The LEGO Batman Movie, it is safe to say that the LEGO craze will be here to stay for a while. And if the trajectory keeps up, I foresee one LEGO movie a year starting 2019, kicking off with The LEGO Movie Sequel.
As for The LEGO Batman Movie, this was a great start to the franchise. The fast-paced wit and similar kind of humour were carried over from its predecessor, with Will Arnett making a great Batman and proving he is able to carry the movie.
However, other than Zach Galifianakis' The Joker, none of the other villains had much to do and casting some known names like Jenny Slate, Zoe Kravitz, Billy Dee Williams, Eddie Izzard and Conan O'Brien seem like a waste. All those character posters were also very unaligned with the actual movie.
But at the core of the story was about family and a very different take on the Dark Knight. In order to make this new Batman work, the introduction of Michael Cera's version of Robin and Rosario Dawson's Barbara Gordon made the story not only accessible in that direction but also made it logical in this universe.
But because of that family element of drama, the story at the end of the second act and beginning of the third act moved a bit slower than the fast paced first half. Especially with such a high level of energy that opened the movie, the slow-down was significantly felt; to an extent where even some of the humour became ineffective.
The ending, though not as impactful as The LEGO Movie, still had great entertainment value and a message in it. And it will be interesting to see where this Batman will go next. Or if it will be the better Batman compared to Ben Affleck's.
