[Review] Daddy's Home (5.5/10)

Sean Anders as a writer has created Sex Drive and She's Out Of My League. He even directed the first one. But with Daddy's Home, which he wrote and directed as well; it was a little frustrating because for every great joke, there was a silly turn of events for his characters.

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell have teamed up once again after The Other Guys to do a straight up comedy. And while their chemistry continued to entertain, some of the parenting issues here looked ridiculous; which made me wonder if Anders even understood parenting.

Not just that, even Linda Cardellini's character sometimes sounded nonsensical as a parent; but the worst thing was that her character was just very poorly written in. She's very one-dimensional and I didn't think she was directed very much. But she made whatever material she was given work to the best of her abilities.

The one that was always funny onscreen was Thomas Haden Church, who always came up with hilarious things to say with a straight face. Unfortunately the opposite was for Hannibal Buress who was horrible as an actor, who said everything without expressions.

After the first two acts, the competitive value between the two dads seemed to have lost its spark and things quickly slowed down from the beginning of the third act. The whole fiasco on the basketball court was when I started to check my brain out.

But overall, there was still some laughs to be enjoyed and the ending did setup for an interesting sequel.
