[Review] Imperium (7/10)

Imperium was one of those movies that came and went quietly without much word about it, but if you gave it a chance, it is actually a good movie.

I did not expect Imperium to be as gripping as it did. From the beginning of the movie, it started off a bit shaky and slow with the setup. But once Daniel Radcliffe shaved his head, the story progressed in such a way that you are glued to the screen right until the end.

The way the director, Daniel Ragussis, wrote and directed it (and as his first directorial debut); it felt like it was done with such care that everything onscreen was enjoyable.

What really opened up my eyes was how the white supremacists were portrayed, some were as I imagined but it was the ones that were just intelligent and well-spoken, had families of their own that looked so normal on the outside but had such different and strong beliefs about how their country should be. Those were the ones that were scary, that they actually existed and had their own little pockets of community amidst the larger society.

The performance by Radcliffe, who almost completely hid his British accent, was partly what made the movie so successful. Toni Collette and Nestor Carbonell did not have too strong a role, but Sam Trammell's portrayal of the aforementioned "normalcy" won me over.

The ending was actually not as satisfying as it could have been as it was a very small climax. But it will be interesting to see what Ragussis tackles next as I completely enjoyed this small movie that clearly had a story to tell.
