JJ Abrams Will Direct Star Wars Episode IX

To be honest, I was rooting for Rian Johnson to come back to direct another episode of Star Wars. His track record on Episode VIII has been stellar so far, except the fact that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has not been released yet.

Still, while other Star Wars project have or are falling apart and having another director to assist in finishing up; Johnson's production was just quietly chugging along and now it's just a few months away from the release date.

But now the Internet has been set on fire because, according to ComingSoon, Lucasfilm has just announced that the director of Episode VII, The Force Awakens - the director who successfully brought Star Wars back, period - is confirmed to close out the trilogy he started.

And to think J.J. Abrams almost passed on directing The Force Awakens, he is now the choice of the studio to bring it home.

Abrams' The Force Awakens had split some of the hardcore fans with his take, saying it is too much of a rehash of A New Hope. But to me, he had a tough job bringing Star Wars back as it was and the result was more than satisfactory.

Nevertheless, Abrams would not have been my top choice either but I have no qualms to have him back in the director's chair.

He will also be writing the screenplay with Chris Terrio.

Episode IX is set to be released on 24 May 2019.
