[Review] The Florida Project (7/10)
The Florida Project was shot almost like a documentary. And it definitely helped the movie achieve the kind of effect that it was going for. And I suspect this is the style of writer-director Sean Baker.
The revelation here was child-actor Brooklynn Prince, who was astonishingly natural in her acting. She also had a great support from the other child actors around her, as well as another newcomer Bria Vinaite.
It was also great to have Willem Dafoe in a small project like this one, and the performance he gave here also took to a different level that put him in a different light that was pleasantly unexpected.
There was so much heart in this story and that final scene, which actually took quite a while to get to, was heartbreaking to watch because by then, we somehow have gradually fallen in love with the dysfunctional dynamic of the mother-daughter relationship.
Some scenes could have been cut out but this was the style of Baker and for what it represented, I thought Baker brought the story and his characters to larger than life.
