[Review] It Comes At Night (8/10)

Whoever came up with the title It Comes At Night, which I will make an educated guess was writer director Trey Edward Shults, has done a great disservice to this movie because at its core, this is a very competent thriller. But the expectations from the "It" in the title has destroyed any chance of commercial success for it.

Shults has a great eye for creating tension from a narrow corridor, and his style in horror did come through; be it inside the house or outside in the woods. He is a competent horror director and I welcome more of his work or would track down his previous and first movie Krisha.

His cast did their jobs and delivered the emotions that were required of them, though there wasn't any performance that stood out so much that became memorable. The three leads, Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott and Carmen Ejogo; as well as Riley Keough; made me feel for each of them. Especially by the end of the movie, it was both scary and crushing just because of how things turned out.

However, because I kind of guessed the ending, it took away the originality of the story a little for me. Still, there were a couple of times that I thought the movie would end at that point, but didn't; and when it actually ended where it did, that did win me back too.

I would highly recommend this horror thriller, it definitely was a gem.
