[Review] Tulip Fever (6.5/10)
A beautiful period piece with a lot of intertwined characters, Tulip Fever tried to be too clever for its own good.
The talent here was undeniable. Alicia Vikander and Dane DeHaan created characters that were suited for a grand, sweeping romance. There were also great supporting characters from Jack O'Connell, Holiday Grainger, Christoph Waltz, Zach Galifianakis, Judi Dench, and the scene stealer Tom Hollander.
The pacing was really promising for the first two acts, only to be destroyed by what the third act was trying to achieve. And in order to tie everything up with tragedy and mishaps, the characters themselves became so contrived and trite that I felt insulted to be watching the plot unfold the way it did - after having invested almost two hours in the movie.
This overall story felt like it would have worked back in the 90's but now it felt so predictable and made me the audience lose interest by the time things started to go south.
But the make-up, the set pieces, and the tulip business as a backdrop all looked brilliant. Too bad the story itself, whether or not it strayed from the source material, was not able to have a more obvious ending.
