[Review] Wind River (9/10)
Taylor Sheridan is an exciting up-and-coming director. He has already cemented himself as one special screenwriter, and with Wind River, he really showed what he can do on the director's chair.
The story here echoed his previous screenplays from Sicario and Hell Or High Water. But this time he was able to tell the story the way he wrote it because he was able to realize his own vision from paper to screen. And I was not able to find fault from his direction.
The way he presented the vastness and the whiteness of the location, it was both beautiful and scary because it not only looked cold but it felt cold watching it. The nothingness out there consumes and we got that right off the first couple of minutes of the movie.
The cast here with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen made a great team, with Renner giving one of his best performances to date, if not the best. I am still waiting for Olsen to receive a role that would push her further in her acting capability, but that is not to say she did not impress here. She really fit the character and you really felt for her towards the end.
Speaking of which, that third act was so intense and raw and painful. And the way Sheridan directed the shoot out was just great from a director who has only done one movie over five years ago. And I thought Renner benefited a lot from Sheridan's directing because I have never seen that quiet emotion right at the end.
Wind River was one of the best movies for 2017.
