Once again, Pete Docter has come up with a story that was very heavy in concept; and by far the least suitable for young children. And this time there aren't any colourful "feelings" to distract them like Inside Out.
As an animated movie, it took some effort to focus on what was going on onscreen as we waded through the concept of death, the in-betweens, and also the building of those concepts in this particular world.
Docter tried to make it as fun, and fast, as possible; but this was the most ambitious world-building from Pixar that I have ever seen. The personalities of soul and how they got them were hilarious - and one thing about this movie that was consistent was the humour, even though sometimes they were dark humour.
Luckily, the characters of Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey were lovable. Their motivations were obvious and easier to follow. The journey of both of these characters, one was more tangible while the other was more abstract; but both represented our everyday-lives.
And that scene where Foxx's character finally gotten what he wanted, and he asked that question that was most human, "what's next?"; I thought that broke the ceiling as to how well the build-up had been.
There was, however, one giant loophole here. That scene when Foxx decided to go back on his own, there was no reason why he would be forced to stay. That wasn't how the rule in this world worked. But I'm sure viewers would be willing to overlook this little bit.
The number of piano scores here were beautiful, and I wouldn't mind getting them. And it made me feel like wanting to do more, try new things. The emotion that the story and the music were able to generate showed just how perfectly they came together.
As a concept in storytelling, I thought this was brilliant. But it was a little more complex than I would have liked it to be as an animated movie.
