[Review] Freaky (6/10)

Title - Freaky
Studio - Blumhouse
Starring - Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Newton, Celeste O'Connor, Alan Ruck, Misha Osherovich, Uriah Shelton
Writer - Christopher Landon, Michael Kennedy
Director - Christopher Landon
Release - 13 November 2020

This movie started off so well. Even the prelude, making a fun ode to slasher movies that came before, as well as the stupidity of the characters for walking into their deaths willingly.

And along the way there were just so many fun moments, moments that I laughed out loud. Yes, part of that fun was seeing Vince Vaughn acted like a teenage girl. And Kathryn Newton was right there beside him, carrying her share the movie.

Misha Osherovich had a few great lines in there, but not many others had their time to shine. In fact, as the movie went along, you would start to see the cracks in the writing, and some characters made the above-mentioned "stupid" decisions.

But even though Christopher Landon was the co-writer for the script, I really enjoyed his direction. That quiet moment when Newton's character walked along the school's hallway only to be screamed at, that was genius. However, a few scenes that Landon wanted to make as great highlights really fell flat, and even ended up as cringe-worthy, like the kiss in the car.

Or that heartfelt moment between daughter and mother in the changing room, again started off really well, only to end with a dud.

I also thought the movie would have ended with more heart, but it really wasn't as clever as Happy Death Day (which was also a mish-mash between the horror genre with a classic premise).
