I knew Emma Stone was going to be something special, but I did not expect how good this movie was going to be. The screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara was almost perfect, and Craig Gillespie told a great story.
But the best thing of course was Stone's performance. Her transformation could have been cheesy and cringe-worthy, but Gillespie turned those elements into a wow-inducing scenes - like the one where she lighted up her outer hooded cape to reveal "Cruella".
At the start of the third act, Stone had to deliver a monologue; and that was an Oscar-worthy scene. I would also, if this was Oscar season already, put Emma Thompson in there for Best Supporting because she could have easily gone over-the-top playing this other version of Glenn Close in The Devil Wears Prada. But she had every muscle of her face controlled to show every change of expression but always very subtly.
On top of that, Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser were great supporting cast. Although, it's jarring for me to see them able to pull off anything that Cruella needed, be it rope climbing or playing an instrument on stage to wow a crowd.
Also, Mark Strong's character wasn't written well enough because we did not get to see what his motivations were for him to do what he did at the end.
The movie ran for over two hours and I was happy to sit through every minute. I would not have thought it beforehand but I want to see a sequel to this.
