This isn't really a movie but it sure plays like one. This is meant as an episode in between seasons 2 and 3 of Kingdom on Netflix that has done very well for itself. And here we see the backstory of Jun Ji Hyun's character, which I guess will be featured heavily, or even lead season 3.
And Jun's performance here was outstanding, portraying as someone who lost everything and has hardened by the experience and the thirst for revenge. It kind of played like a series of unfortunate events but it did not feel like it was forced into the story. It all happened very organically and we were able to just follow in her story.
There were also a big revelation here to connect to the first two seasons and I thought that also played out very organically, though I'm not sure if it should have been this way.
The CGI still looked just like the first two seasons, quite heavily used for the surroundings and locations. That would be one of the very few drawbacks and this detracted that realistic look and feel that should be as grounded as its storytelling.
Also that daughter and father arc really packed a punch. It had some raw emotions that was very refreshing coming from a South Korean production.
One thing I would protest against was the chaining up of the zombies. To avoid going into spoiler territory, I would have to just leave it as that.
But as a story that came with the runtime of a feature length movie, this was one of the best ones I have seen this year.
