Has Ben Falcone ever directed something that was at least decent? I can't think of any. This one was probably one of the worse ones, taking on the superhero trope and trying to give it a different spin.
Octavia Spencer looked like she just sleepwalked through the entire thing, and that's quite unfortunate for such a great actress of her caliber. That can only suggest how uninspired the script was (or Falcone's directing).
And it's such a pity because this has quite a strong cast. I have been enjoying Bobby Cannavale's work more and more, and there's also Melissa Leo who looked like she outclassed everyone here. But honestly, I tuned in for Jason Bateman. Sure enough, he did not disappoint even though it's a very Bateman kind of performance. His "crab exit" was hilarious.
Melissa McCarthy was still Melissa McCarthy. It's really time she hung up these silliness and grow as an actor towards the more serious flair.
