I'm actually surprised that I liked Candyman enough to give it a score higher than average. I thought it would be cheesy and predictable with typical horror-flick tropes.

What I wasn't expecting was a nice, tiny twist to the background of Candyman (there's a reason I didn't use the word "origin" because that ultimately wasn't changed), and I thought it stuck to the core of the original movie which was a nice tribute. Also, bringing back Vanessa Williams was a nice touch.

There were also no cheap scares, which I will always appreciate. Not to say there weren't any, just that those scenes were a byproduct of the story rather than the other way around. The real suspense came from the story itself.

However, even with all the pros above, the whole thing just wasn't interesting or gripping enough. It was watchable with great performances from Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyhonah Parris, but I'll never get characters in movies that allow a small injury, or in this case an insect bite, turn into an infection or worse without going to see a doctor.
