There was just something that stopped me from going into this world with M. Night Shyamalan's characters. And I hate to say this, but I think it was the performances of Vicky Krieps and Gael Garcia Bernal. I was never to buy them as a couple and they just felt forced to take the lead on this movie.

Also the concept and the "uniqueness" of this island was a bit difficult to grasp. When some of them tried to leave, they just faint and got "returned" back to the beach without any explanation as to how or why. And then this wasn't the case for another later on. The rules of the island just wasn't established enough to be believable.

Alex Wolff might be a little too old to play a teenager, even though he probably is the go-to for horror movies after his wonderful performance in Hereditary. But while his character was supposed to be younger than his sister; he looked, and is, older than Thomasin McKenzie. So I'm not sure about half of the casting choices here.

Taking all these out, the movie was not too bad. Some great suspense, a few horrific scenes. Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung and Abbey Lee were the ones that looked their parts the most.

The storytelling was in the classic Shyamalan style, though it was one of his weaker ones.  The way he shot one part of the beach in order for another part of the beach to develop was actually quite well done. But then again, one could also argue for how unconnected two groups of people were even though they were on the same beach and belonging to one family.

Unfortunately, this would not be fondly remembered.
