If this movie didn't come with a well-known lead like Mark Wahlberg, it probably wouldn't have gotten any attention. Also, it's not the most captivating story; so having someone like Wahlberg really helped its cause.
Reid Miller was also good, but he wasn't the central character; hence the movie title. Not knowing anything about these persons beforehand probably helped my curiosity. But then the "big revelation" came just midway through the movie, while everything else from there had to be anchored by Wahlberg, and to a certain extent Connie Britton. Luckily there was Gary Sinise towards the end that kind of gave it a nice finish.
I'm not sure why the movie wouldn't focus on the speeches and talks that Joe Bell gave. Maybe what we saw here was what he did. Maybe he wasn't a good speaker. But we don't really know anything about that part of his journey. And maybe in a subtle way, the movie was saying, what he did didn't make any impact at all.
