A much better movie than its predecessor, Army Of The Dead. This one has a very linear story, much simpler in plot, and more entertaining. However, it's also not a great movie.
There's nothing special about it, nothing original about it. Right from the start you can be sure already that someone is going to betray the group.
Heist movies are always sexy. To a certain degree it was true in Army Of Thieves. And good job on Matthias Schweighofer to achieve that in a movie about picking safe boxes. The use of the CGI to view into the cogs and wheels of locks were a bit much. It was effective the first time, but with every lock being picked, we went into it again and again and we, the casual viewer of cogs and wheels would have no idea what we're looking at; or if what we're looking at was how actual locks looked like inside (I'm guessing it's not).
The cast was actually good in their portrayals, though the script did not require too much. However, the character progression for the two leads, Schweighofer and Nathalie Emmanuel, ended in a bit of a downer for Schweighofer where his character looked quite bad to leave like that. But, it is obviously to setup for another instalment if Netflix would greenlight it.
Also, the side plot of the law enforcers chasing the "army" was completely a waste of effort. The character Delacroix, played by Jonathan Coen, was supposed to come off as a bit of a comic relief, I am guessing, but every time we saw him he felt unnecessary and detracted from what was actually interesting.
But as a heist movie, it's fun enough to give it a watch.
