It's so hard to rate a movie that clearly isn't finished. Dune presented a setup and a world-building that were necessary (hopefully) in order to appreciate the second movie which has already been announced. But this was not even close to The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring which had a clear first, second and third act; and was totally mesmerizing and satisfying.
Which led me to believe that this would have been a much better effort as a limited series on HBO. It could have been the sci-fi version of Game Of Thrones (blasphemous to say, perhaps, since Dune the novel was first released in 1965; but you get the comparison).
There was no doubt that the picture looked beautiful under the direction of Denis Villeneauve, and all the cast were great. Even Zendaya, whom I have never really enjoyed from the few movies that I have seen her in; but here I finally get why her talent is well sought after.
The downside about this movie was that it was not just a long movie, but halfway through it; and as I have never read the book or seen the previous adaptation; I had no idea where the movie was going. There was too much to tell, I didn't understand the politics, and because it's such a big scope that I wanted more focus on each of the side characters.
At the end of the movie, I had no idea what happened to a few of them. If that was a creative choice then it wasn't really a good one.
