[Review] The Card Counter (4/10)

Title - The Card Counter
Production - Focus Features, LB Entertainment
Starring - Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, Willem Dafoe
Writer - Paul Schrader
Director - Paul Schrader
Release - 10 September 2021

This was even more disappointing after seeing Martin Scorsese's name attached as a producer. The Card Counter was titled misleadingly. There was no card counting.

Poker or Blackjack was how the movie started, but then reduced to the background as Oscar Isaac's character met Tye Sheridan's, pushing something far more serious into the forefront.

I would have, yes, firstly title the movie differently, but then right off the bat have the casino be a minor subplot and have Willem Dafore's character more prominently presented, and make the film a more obvious thriller. Hence, perhaps, making the marketing more clear cut and easier to sell the movie.

On top of that, Tiffany Haddish was not good casting. There was no chemistry between her and Isaac, and the plot never really gave them chemistry-filled lines to work with,

Also, Sheridan's character was never likeable, and I couldn't really care about him throughout the movie and had no idea why Isaac's character did.
