The trailers for this movie did not do it justice, granted that there probably wasn't any way to do it without giving too much away. And I'm glad they didn't and I'm glad I finally went to see it despite having no interest.

The first 30 minutes I actually didn't really care for. They established some kind of drama into the story to make the characters real, and I get it even though it was really secondary to what we went into it for. Fortunately, also, that drama did not overpower what we wanted to see, which was the lion.

If it was CGI, the lion was beautifully realistic. There were a couple of scenes that the lion did catch me by surprise and I really appreciated those. Also because the director Baltasar Kormakur did not lean heavier into the jump scares - which evidently were not necessary.

There were a couple of scenes that I could have done without, like the dream sequence or the tension-building with the walkie-talkie. I would like to see Hollywood come up with newer ways to keep audience tensed up.

But that final fight sequence was amazing as it reminded of the famous fight scene between Leonardo DiCaprio with a bear in The Revenant.
