Jaume Collet-Serra can't direct a huge tentpole movie like Black Adam. I don't believe the script was as bad as how the movie turned out to be. But it was the director creating cringy scenes after cringy scenes.
There were scenes where Dwayne Johnson was not impervious to Collet-Serra's cringe-worthy directions. Certainly, when Noah Centineo and Quintessa Swindell were in a scene together, they induced cringe in the first second. And every single time we have young Bodhi Sabongui on screen, I want to claw my ears and eyes off my head.
But thankfully, Aldis Hodge's and Pierce Brosnan's performances were top-notched. Especially Brosnan who electrified the screen whenever he popped up. I couldn't get enough of him wearing his Dr. Fate suit. I would like to see him return to this world more, if possible.
However, while all the action sequences looked great, there were beats within sequences that did not make sense. Why would Hawkman run up the stairs when he could fly, especially when he was rushing to get up there? The whole progression for Sabongui's character to motivate his community to fight, was horribly done. And no one was afraid that undead army? Things like these just took me out of the movie straight away because they lacked verisimilitude.
Still, Johnson's portrayal of Black Adam surprised me. I thought it would just be another one of Johnson's typical performances as an action hero. But there was something more to it that made me want to see more of this world... as long as Sabongui does not narrate anymore.
