I initially thought that the director Bart Freundlich was not the director but he did the best he could with the screenplay. So when I found out he also made a pass at the script, something went a little off with the dialogue.
Each dramatic scene could have drawn out the emotions of the audience had it been more meaty, instead it felt like the scenes were interrupted on the editing board and I didn't get enough from the great cast.
The movie reminded me of Stepmom but just without those emotional scenes that made me teared up. Still, the leads dd great with the emotions, even Abby Quinn whom I have never seen before had a great emotional performance despite the lack of words.
