What I don't understand is why The Son has been completely shut out of this year's Oscar race. Hugh Jackman gave a performance of a lifetime and, in my eyes, he could even win Best Actor. Yet, he's not even nominated.
Zen McGrath's tender performance was hauntingly beautiful as well and should have been included in the Best Supporting Actor race.
I could put in an argument for Vanessa Kirby as well for Best Supporting Actress, but she would never beat Angela Bassett. And Laura Dern is just too far away from Cate Blanchett. Still, this movie boasted performances that were incredible. Not to mention that one scene with Anthony Hopkins.
This movie broke me. At my age, and looking through Hugh Jackman's eyes as a father, it brought a sense of reality to all the "what if's"; and I'm glad I don't have a child to worry about.
Jackman's performance as a helpless father was so compelling, and the way Florian Zeller directed him gave such a personal and intimate feeling for the audience. That sequence towards the end of the movie broke me because it was exactly what I would have done, where I would stay stuck, and crumble to the floor like he did.
This movie is one that will be difficult to rewatch because I just don't want to feel that way again.
