This movie looked good right from the first trailer released. And when they released the last trailer where the heroes were resurrecting dead corpses for information, I laughed so loud. So going in, I had high hopes.
Yes, the overall movie was highly entertaining. The cast was great. And after watching Sharper, I was won over and ready to see more of Justice Smith. What I missed a little, was I wanted to see more of Hugh Grant and Rege-Jean Page, both of whom had quite limited screen time.
However, there was not enough substance from act to act. Grant's presence, while captivating, didn't have a lot to do in the overall story. Same went for some of the individual story arcs, particularly for Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, and Pine's character's daughter, played by Chloe Coleman. Considering she was one of the motivation behind Pine's journey, there wasn't a strong enough resolution in the third act.
And while I loved the resurrecting sequence, that was the high point of the whole movie for me. And that was in the middle of the second act. The third act didn't quite surpass the entertainment value, even though the stakes and production value were supposed to be higher.
But the dialogue was cleverly and aptly written. You can just imagine real players saying those lines in those situations while playing the table-top game. That's a big win.
