The nostalgia game was strong in this one. There were a lot of scenes or sequences that were visually entertaining just because of nostalgia factor, and to be able to see them on the big screen was really the best part of the movie - and unfortunately so.
The story, the script, the dialogue was just baseline passable. Seems like the producers decided that the movie should be just visuals instead of story. Things happened just because they needed to happen or just because a character said so, and then we're off to the next scene.
Luigi, voiced by Charlie Day and in a performance that I didn't expect from Day - a pleasant surprise, was supposed to have his own little arc, but it never got fleshed out. Only Chris Pratt's Mario, also another great casting choice, had the benefit of more focus.
Jack Black's Bowser and Anya Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach were very memorable; though, again, the "if you don't love me I will kill you" trope just treated the audience as simple-minded zombies.
Even at 90 minutes runtime, I felt the length. But because the visuals were so stunning, the directors kept using them as distractions - and they worked.
And because of that, I would actually like to see more from this universe. Especially Seth Rogen's Donkey Kong which had a great battle sequence with Mario.
