There seemed to be a whole chunk of footage that was cut out from this movie. Either that, or the movie was horribly written because there was very little focus on the lead character played by Callum Turner. So little that his performance was very one note because there wasn't much for him to do.

He had one outburst and only that scene showed that he was actually a good performer. His love interest with Hadley Robinson barely made coherence towards the end.

Actually, neither Turner nor Joel Edgerton felt like a lead character in the entire movie. Turner's character felt like he was supposed to have a bigger character development, and Edgerton's was never meant to have that so he couldn't have been the lead.

The dialogue for each scene was very short, even though they were expertly shot by George Clooney. But with such short dialogue each time, it's very difficult to get into any emotion and so we were just left watching it from the outside.

There actually was a third lead character contender. The coxswain played by Luke Slattery actually ended up with a more important role in the third act. He should have been made the lead character instead because of how the movie ended with him winning the race.

The best thing about this movie was the musical score from Alexandre Desplat and the cinematography by Martin Ruhe. And the actual races were also very exciting to watch even though we all knew how the movie would end.
