A nail-biting thriller on the subject of voting in the next pope? I don't know how they did it but that's exactly what we got.
And this year has to be Ralph Fiennes' year. It's already a Hollywood crime that he has never been nominated for the Academy Awards before, but this has got to be his best work yet.
Also, not only Fiennes, but two other fine actors in Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow also were never been nominated; and deserve to be this year in the Supporting category (although they would both lose to Jeremy Strong in The Apprentice).
It's amazing Edward Berger and Peter Straughan were able to create such a thrilling atmosphere from something as boring as waiting to see who becomes the next pope. Straughan adapted this beautifully from Robert Harris' novel, while Berger and his cinematographer Stephan Fontaine created gorgeous scenery and colours that were the most memorable of the year for me.
