It's just two people talking, mostly, throughout the movie. It's very intimate. The dialogue was written in such a flowery way that it wasn't casually conversational. But Tilda Swinton, especially, and Julianne Moore delivered them expertly; and both were very impressive.
This was a movie that's all about acting in conversations and nothing more. But because the subject was interesting, we kept wanting to know what both lead characters were thinking. So we get hooked.
It had nice framing, well decorated rooms where the conversations took place, and a nice location where framing those shots must have been a delight.
